[Sidley] is enthusiastic about placing drawings on the wall directly rather than using a rectangular sheet of paper, as it allows the drawn image to occupy the real space more emphatically, and not hived off from its environment. The ephemeral aspect of her work appeals to her as the drawing takes on a lifetime that is limited, similarly to that of a living creature. Sidley also likes working in black and white (rather than using any colour) as it distinguishes and sets the drawn image apart from the rest of its setting. In producing the three full-body portraits for this show, she had been thinking about the gallery space where the exhibition would take place, and then about the person who works in that space and knows it intimately - its curator - who posed for her camera to create the work. Sidley worked to create a faked up floor and baseboard directly on the gallery walls, which gives the illusion that the figure is located back from the wall in a room that does not actually exist.
